Botox for TMJ Pain, Jaw Clenching and Grinding in Shore Acres

Shore Acres Botox for TMJ Pain, Jaw Clenching and Grinding

What does Botox do at a dental office?

Botox has two uses at a dental office: it can quiet the muscles that clench and grind your teeth, and it can soften lines in the upper face. Both are injections into the head and neck, which is the anatomy dentistry works in every day.

At North Harbor Dentistry, Botox is placed in the masseter and frontalis muscle groups. The masseter is the thick muscle you can feel at the back of your jaw when you bite down. The frontalis is the muscle that lifts your eyebrows and creases your forehead.

Botox for TMJ pain, clenching and grinding

Jaw pain is often muscle pain. Patients often assume the trouble is in the joint itself, but the majority of TMJ symptoms come from the muscles that close the jaw working harder than they should, often at night, without you knowing it. Relaxing the masseter reduces how hard that muscle can squeeze, which can ease the ache and take some of the load off teeth that are being ground down.

Worth mentioning to us if any of this sounds familiar:

  • A tight, tired or sore jaw when you wake up
  • Aching at the temples or just in front of your ears
  • Teeth that are flattening, chipping or turning sensitive to cold
  • Someone in the house who hears you grinding at night
  • A jaw that clicks, catches or will not open as wide as it used to

Headaches often travel with clenching. Whether Botox has any role in yours is a question to put to the dentist rather than something to assume, so bring it up and you will get a straight answer about your own case.

Botox and a night guard solve different halves of the problem

A night guard protects your teeth from the force. Botox works on the force itself. Plenty of people do best with both: the guard absorbs what is left, and there is less to absorb. If you already sleep in a guard and still wake up with a sore jaw, that is exactly the conversation to start.

Botox for facial lines

Relaxing the frontalis can soften the horizontal lines it creases into your forehead. It is the cosmetic side of the same treatment, and it can be discussed in the same visit as whitening or porcelain veneers. Results vary from person to person, and nothing about the outcome is guaranteed.

Why the jaw muscles are dental territory

The muscles that clench your jaw are the same muscles a dental exam already covers. Dentistry spends every working day in the head and neck: where the masseter attaches, how your bite loads it, why one side is often bigger than the other, and what worn or fractured teeth say about how hard you clench. Botox for the masseter is offered here because it sits in that same territory, alongside a look at your bite, your enamel and your joint in one appointment.

That matters most when Botox is not the answer. If your symptoms are being driven by a high filling, a cracked tooth or a missing one, that turns up during the exam instead of being covered over.

What happens at the appointment?

A Botox visit at North Harbor Dentistry starts with an exam and a conversation, not a needle. We go through your symptoms and your health history, feel the muscles while you clench, look at how your teeth are wearing, and talk about what you want to change. If Botox makes sense, the injections are done right here in the office. If something else makes more sense, we will tell you that instead.
